Why the name Chronos?
Chronos draws on sound pedagogical
principles and practices.
Chronos (khronos) is the Greek word for time.
It was chosen as the name of this learning programme because
long-term thinking is so important to sustainable development. As
the report of the Brundtland Commission of 1987 says:
Sustainable development is not a fixed
state of harmony, but rather a process of change in which the
exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the
orientation of technological development, and institutional change
are made consistent with future as well as present needs.
The definition of time from the Oxford
English Dictionary is "the indefinite continued progress of
existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a
whole." The phrase "indefinite continued progress" is really
another way of describing sustainability.
Thinking long term involves looking beyond
quarterly targets to the future competitive position of the
company. Great business leaders have the capacity to think
long-term. They can foresee and respond to global trends before
others realise the business environment has changed.
